Meet Our Math Tutor: Jim Densmore

We’re excited to introduce Jim, one of the dedicated volunteers behind our free library math tutoring program. With a background in engineering and computer science, Jim enjoys helping students build confidence by understanding how math works rather than just memorizing steps. Jim is retired from systems engineering and software development. He has tutored math at Palmer High School and is currently an aviation content trainer for the STEM education organization Falcon Aerolab.

We asked Jim a few questions so students and families can get to know him a little better before signing up for a session.

How would you describe your approach to math tutoring?

I start by addressing the specific problems students are working on, and then we look at the underlying concepts so they gain the understanding needed to solve other problems as well.

What do you enjoy most about helping students learn math?

Mathematics is an exact science—the answers are objective and don’t change. In a world with a lot of uncertainty, that can be very refreshing, and I enjoy helping students see that.

What should students expect during a typical tutoring session?

We focus first on the problems at hand, and then on the concepts behind them, so students can solve not only similar problems, but also others that may look completely different.

Do students need to already be strong in math?

Not at all. Beginners are just as welcome as students with a strong math background. Teaching students who are new to math can be more challenging, but that’s my responsibility as the tutor.

How do you help students who feel nervous about math?

I can’t make math easy, but once students understand how to do a problem, I can help them see the underlying ideas, ways to approach similar problems, and things they can practice on their own to keep improving.

How has your background in engineering and computer science influenced your teaching?

It allows me to show students how math applies beyond the classroom and how these skills connect to real professional work.

What do you enjoy about tutoring in a library setting?

Students have easy access to me here, and hopefully that makes it easier for them to come in and ask questions when they need help.
